Rick Beaver
Ojibway
Rick Beaver was born in 1948 on the Alderville Indian Reserve on Rice Lake, Southern Ontario. A degree in wildlife biology is
a strong influence on his painting which he began full-time in 1981. His art evokes an emotional response which harks back
to the origin of earth’s people. Allying nature and art, Rick’s works show definite textured contrasts. Backgrounds are softly
amorphous and lilting compared to the sculptural linearity of the creature he has chosen to depict. This melding of forms that
are faithful to biology with abstract backdrops is at the heart of the paintings of Rick Beaver.
Rick Beaver est né en 1948 sur la réserve indienne d’Alderville, au bord du lac Rice, dans le sud de l’Ontario. Son diplôme en
biologie sauvage a largement influencé ses peintures, lorsqu’il s’y est consacré à plein temps en 1981. Son art exprime une
résponse émotionnelle qui remonte à l’origine de l’homme sur la terre. En alliant l’art et la nature, les oeuvres de Rick nous
montrent des contrastes d’une structure bien déterminée. Les arrière-plans sont légèrement flous et mélodieux par rapport
à la précision graphique de la créature qu’il a choisi de représenter. Cette fonte des formes, qui restent fidèles à la biologie,
agrémentée de toiles de fond abstraites, constituent l’essence des peintures de Rick Beaver.
Lisa Berry
Métis
Lisa Berry was born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on Treaty 8 territory. She resides in British Columbia’s Fraser
Valley and is a proud member of Métis Nation BC. Lisa is a self-taught artist. She began creating art at a young age with
the aspiration of becoming an artist. In 2022, she launched her art business, Floral Feathers. Since then, she has had the
opportunity to collaborate with Métis Nations across the homeland to create original prints, colouring sheets, and “Every
Child Matters” t-shirts, among other projects. Lisa’s art showcases the beauty of Métis culture, featuring the florals seen
in beadwork and Indigenous women.
Lisa Berry est née et a grandi à Grand Prairie, en Alberta, sur le territoire du Traité 8. Elle réside dans la vallée du Fraser,
en Colombie-Britannique, et est fière d’être membre de la Nation Métisse de la C. B. Lisa est une artiste autodidacte. Elle a
commencé à créer des œuvres d’art dès son jeune âge en aspirant devenir artiste. En 2022, elle lance sa compagnie, Floral
Feathers. Depuis, elle a eu l’occasion de collaborer avec des nations métisses à travers le pays pour créer des gravures
originales, des cahiers à colorier et des t-shirts « Every Child Matters » (« Chaque enfant compte »), entre autres. L’art de Lisa
met en valeur la beauté de la culture métisse, notamment les fleurs que l’on retrouve dans le perlage des femmes autochtones.
Isaac Bignell
Cree
Isaac Bignell was a Cree painter, born in 1958 on the Pas Reserve, 400 miles north of Winnipeg in Manitoba. Isaac moved
to Winnipeg, then to Minneapolis and later to Vancouver. Outside of a few art classes Isaac was a self-taught painter, who
developed his own style of sponge painting of wildlife images distinguished by flowing lines. Isaac died at the peak of his
career at the age of 37, but his art remains as his legacy.
Isaac Bignell était un peintre Cri, né en 1958 à la réserve de Le Pas, à 650 km au nord de Winnipeg, au Manitoba. M. Bignell
a habité Winnipeg, Minneapolis, puis, plus tard, Vancouver. À part quelques cours d’expression artisque, M. Bignell était au
peintre autodidacte qui a développé son propre style de peinture à l’éponge et de scènes animalières caractérisées par la grâce
de leurs lignes. M. Bignell est décédé au sommet de sa carrière, à l’âge de 37 ans, mais il nous a transmis son art en héritage.
