Mark Preston

Mark Preston (Tenna‘Tsa‘Teh) was born in Dawson City, Yukon. He is of Tlingit and Irish descent and travels extensively
throughout British Columbia and the Yukon to market his work. Mark has studied and worked in various mediums including
paper, cloth, wood, metals, stone and most recently, he has started working on glass. Mark has also studied silver carving
with well known master jeweler and carver, Gitksan artist Phil Janzé, while attending K’san in Hazelton.
Mark Preston (Tenna ‘Tsa‘Teh) est né à Dawson City, au Yukon. Il est d’origine tlingit et irlandaise et voyage beaucoup en
Colombie-Britannique et au Yukon pour commercialiser son travail. Mark a étudié et travaillé dans divers domaines, notamment
le papier, le tissu, le bois, les métaux, la pierre et plus récemment, il a commencé à travailler sur le verre. Mark a également
étudié la gravure sur argent auprès de Phil Janzé, artiste gitksan, célèbre joaillier et sculpteur, lors de ses études à K’san à
Hazelton.

Pudlo’s works over the years demonstrate his keen visual sense, his versatility and innovativeness in subject matter and
technique, tempered by his sense of humour – his knowledge of traditional life on the land and his acknowledgment of the
changing times…Pudlo’s thinking/drawing process is a truly creative approach, done both consciously and unconsciously.
In the 1978 Cape Dorset print catalogue (p. 67) Pudlo talks about his drawing: “At times when I draw, I am happy, but
sometimes it is very hard. I have been drawing a long time now. I only draw what I think, but sometimes I think the pencil
has a brain too.”
Les œuvres de Pudlo au fil des ans démontrent son sens visuel vif, sa polyvalence et son innovation philosophique et technique,
tempérée par son sens de l’humour --- sa connaissance de la vie traditionnelle sur les terres et sa reconnaissance de l’évolution
du temps... La pensée et le tracé de Pudlo est une véritable approche créative, faite consciemment et inconsciemment. Dans
l’édition de 1978 du catalogue imprimé de Cape Dorset (p.67), Pudlo parle de son trait: «Parfois, quand je dessine, je suis
heureux, mais c’est parfois très difficile. Je dessine depuis longtemps maintenant. Je dessine uniquement ce que je pense,
mais parfois je crois que le crayon a une pensée aussi.»

Lucy Qinnuayuak was a prolific graphic artist, well-known for illustrations of her favourite theme – the bird image, either
singularly or in groups and in all sorts of situations or relationships. She also depicts other themes which spring from her
personal interpretation of the Canadian Inuit traditional way of life. She was born in Salluit in northern Quebec and at a
very young age along with her mother and sister, moved to Baffin Island, Northwest Territories, where they lived in Cape
Dorset and in several outpost camps. She met her husband, Tikituk, a sculptor and graphic artist at Supujuak camp where
they enjoyed a traditional way of life. In the early 1960’s they moved to Cape Dorset.
Lucy Qinnuayuak était une graphiste prolifique, bien connue pour ses illustrations de son thème de prédilection - l’image de
l’oiseau, seul ou en groupe et dans toutes sortes de situations ou de relations. Elle dépeint également d’autres thèmes qui
découlent de son interprétation personnelle du mode de vie traditionnel des Inuits du Canada. Elle est née à Salluit dans le
nord du Québec et, très jeune, avec sa mère et sa sœur, elle a déménagé à l’île de Baffin, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest,
où elles ont vécu à Cape Dorset et dans plusieurs camps éloignés. Elle a rencontré son mari, Tikituk, sculpteur et graphiste au
camp de Supujuak où ils ont vécu un mode de vie traditionnel. Au début des années 1960, ils ont déménagé à Cape Dorset.
